Do Speed Cameras Flash in Australia?
Short answer: some do, but many do not produce a flash you can see.
Equipment, lighting, camera direction and jurisdiction all affect flash behaviour. A bright flash is not proof that a fine will follow, and no visible flash is not proof that no image was taken.
Flash Behaviour by Camera Type
The descriptions below are general equipment characteristics from the current SpeedCamsAU camera-type dataset. Individual installations can differ.
| Camera type | Typical flash behaviour |
|---|---|
| Fixed Speed Camera | Most fixed cameras use infrared flash (invisible) for rear-facing captures. Some older models use visible flash. |
| Mobile Speed Camera | Mobile cameras typically do not flash. They use high-resolution cameras that can capture clear images without flash, even in low light. |
| Red Light Camera | Red light cameras typically flash twice — once as you cross the stop line and once when you are in the intersection. |
| Average Speed Camera | Average speed cameras use infrared ANPR readers and generally do not produce a visible flash. |
| School Zone Camera | Similar to fixed cameras — most use infrared flash. |
| Phone Detection Camera | Phone detection cameras use infrared illumination and do not produce a visible flash. |
Why You May Not See a Flash
Infrared illumination can light a number plate or vehicle cabin for the camera without creating the bright white flash a driver expects. Modern digital sensors can also capture usable daylight images without extra illumination.
Camera position matters as well. Rear-facing equipment may flash behind the vehicle, roadside structures can block the driver's view, and a flash aimed at another lane or vehicle may appear to come from the same site.
What a Flash Can Tell You
Very little on its own. The only reliable evidence of an issued offence is the infringement notice or a record already available through the relevant state portal. A flash cannot confirm which vehicle triggered the system, what offence was alleged or whether the captured material passed review.
